How To Start Using Facebook’s Messenger Day For Your Brand

We’re marketers – so it’s only natural we’d find ways to use Messenger Day for business. 🙃

Like the rest of the social media world, we woke up earlier this week to discover Facebook’s newest Snapchat clone, Messenger Day, staring at us from the top of our favourite messaging app. Our first thought was ‘Really? Do we actually need another disappearing chat function in our lives? The answer right now is ‘Probably not, but let’s see’.

The recent Haste & Hustle conference in Niagara, ON taught us that there is a lot of work going into the fascinating world of Facebook Messenger, including Chatbots, which will eventually be a key element of both Facebook Messenger, and your other fave chatting apps. So major updates to the platform come as no surprise.

Facebook have been trying to monetize Messenger for a while now, so this could be a way to introduce advertising à la Snapchat, albeit with an increased user base due to Messenger Day. Or perhaps they might integrate Instagram Stories with Messenger Day so you can seamlessly publish a post on both services at once?

Whatever will happen with Messenger Day is anyone’s guess at this point, but in the meantime, here are some cool ways to use the latest function from the world’s largest social network.

1. Cater to your audience

Currently, Facebook Messenger is only available to personal accounts for now, and not Business Pages (seeing as Pages can’t access Messenger), so we’ll approach this from a personal network viewpoint. If you’re an entrepreneur or you run your own business, chances are that you promote it via your personal Facebook account and you already have a decent network of folks who are interested in what you’re doing.

Take advantage of this potentially easy access to your network. The jury is still out as to whether Messenger Day comes under the algorithm or not, but start using it early and regularly so it knows you mean business.

2. News & Updates

Instead of just jamming your Facebook feed with updates about what you and your company are doing, bring it over to Messenger Day. Releasing a new podcast? Got a new YouTube video dropping? About to put out a new blog post? Let your network know via Messenger Day.

This should help you reach parts of your network who may be currently unreachable due to the algorithm, while allowing you the freedom to promote your wares in a more fun, casual way. Use the drawing feature or throw on some emojis, filters or even some text.

3. Employee-Generated Content

Seeing as your brand can’t directly use the Day feature yet, consider boosting your reach by getting employees to post via their personal accounts. If your employees don’t mind, having a ton of people from the same company document a new product, an event or even just giving people a behind-the-scenes look at your company can create a real buzz and reach a lot of people who normally wouldn’t be aware of what you do. It also requires less commitment as it won’t be posted directly to their timelines, and will disappear in 24 hours.

4. Live Posts from Events

As with Instagram Stories or Snapchat, a great way to use Messenger Day is to post live from events. Whether it’s something directly related to your brand (a grand opening or Christmas party) or more of a lifestyle post (you’re attending a concert or a conference) to show your network what you and your company are all about, Day is a great way to showcase your personality – and therefore the personality of your brand – to a whole new audience.

5. Promote your other social networks

Being that Messenger Day is located on the largest yet most restrictive of social networks, one great way to use the feature is to push your network to follow you on your other profiles. Are you a photographer? Take/upload a slick photo and add some text asking your Facebook friends to follow your Instagram handle. Are you a witty comedian? Post a hilarious image encouraging your aunts and uncles to follow you on Twitter for more of your zany quips.
However you decide to use Facebook Messenger Day, it’s still extremely early and as we all know, the winds can change very quickly in the world of social media. Do you have an interesting way to use Messenger Day? Let us know in the comments!
